Moët & Chandon Champagne
Moët & Chandon Champagne
THE CHAMPAGNE PRODUCER MOËT & CHANDON WAS FOUNDED IN 1743 IN ÉPERNAY. ITS CUVÉE IS DOM PÉRIGNON.
MOËT & CHANDON BELONGS TO FAMILY GROUP LVMH.
The company's history dates back to 1742, when Claude Moët (1683-1760) began to produce wine from the Champagne to export to Paris. In 1794, Jean-Remy Moët bought the former monastery of Hautvillers, where the monk Dom Pérignon learned the production techniques for Champagne had refined, and Moët soon began exporting it to other European countries and the United States. In 1832, Moët expanded the company name to include "Chandon" when he passed half of the company to his son Victor Moët and son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles. Moët & Chandon was k.u.k. Court and Chamber supplier and Royal English Court supplier. In 1963 Moët & Chandon took over the traditional house Ruinart, and in 1971 the producer Mercier, active mainly on the French market, was bought. In the same year, the merger with the cognac producer Hennessy took place. Then in 1987, Moët Hennessy merged with Louis Vuitton to form the luxury goods group LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). The partner brought the Veuve Clicquot house into the marriage. Then, at the end of the 1990s, the small but exclusive house Krug was acquired. Moët has been the market leader in champagne sales for many years. In the year 2007 the total sales of the LVMH Group amounted to 62.2 million bottles, which was 18 % of the total production of Champagne. The most prestigious champagne is the famous Dom Pérignon, which costs at least 100 euros per bottle. In the gastronomic sector, Moët is the most widely used. The winery owns about 1000 hectares of vineyards in Champagne. This is distributed among about 200 wine-growing communes. Among them are 16 of the 17 communes with Grand Cru status and 25 communes with Premier Cru status. Moët & Chandon also owns the most extensive chalk cellars in Épernay. Their corridors extend for about 110 km and have their own "street" designations. The oldest storage areas in this cellar date back to 1743, the year of its foundation.
