Champagne production and viticulture

Avize is one of the 17 sites classified as Grand Cru, which is the highest status for Champagne growing areas. The area under cultivation in Avize is currently 273 hectares (as of 2023), all of which is planted with Chardonnay. Chardonnay is the main grape variety in the region, known for its elegance and finesse. The vineyards are mainly east-facing and are planted at altitudes between 110 and 210 metres above sea level.

The higher vineyards in particular, to the west of Ambonnay, are among the best sites in Avize. These sites produce Chardonnay grapes of exceptional quality, which regularly compete with those from the neighbouring Grand Cru communes of Cramant and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. These three communes are famous for their first-class Champagnewhich are appreciated for their finesse, complexity and fine bouquet.
