Vin Gris

The term vin gris is experiencing a small renaissance in California, where very good, more or less pink-coloured wines are now known under this name.

The dignified, old grape variety Pinot Gris (formerly known as Fromenteau), grown in and around the Champagne region, may also have contributed to the name Vin Gris. Pinot Gris was later replaced in cultivation by the Chardonnay grape variety from Champagne. Pinot Gris is a grape variety from the famous Pinot family. The grapes appear grey to pink when ripe. In Germany, this grape variety is known as Rüländer. Even today, it is sometimes referred to as Tokay in Alsace (although 'Tokay' is actually the name for a famous wine from Hungary). As early as the 16th century, excellent wines made from Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir (then known as 'Morrillon Noir') from the Champagne region were of great importance. In the meantime, the high-quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay have established themselves in Champagne. However, the famous cellar master Dom Perignon must have been well aware of the Pinot Gris grape variety at the time.
