Crémant

Crémant is a sparkling wine with a lower carbon dioxide pressure (approx. 3.5 bar) than champagne (approx. 6 bar). It is produced using the same method as champagne by means of a second fermentation in the bottle. The yeast is simply given less sugar for the second fermentation than for champagne, which means that less carbon dioxide or CO2 is produced. Crémants therefore ultimately appear somewhat 'tamer' in the glass than a champagne in terms of the bubbles. However, the designation crémant has no longer been permitted in Champagne since 1 September 1994, although this type of sparkling wine is still available from some (few) champagne houses. The house of Mumm, for example, still supplies an excellent crémant called Mumm de Cramant. This sparkling wine used to be called Mumm Crémant de Cramant. Mumm uses only the best Chardonnay grapes from its vineyards in the wine-growing commune of Cramant. However, the designation is permitted in other wine-growing regions of France. Crémants such as Crémant de Bordeaux, Crémant de Bourgogne or Crémant de Loire have therefore existed for a long time.

Crémant and Champagne are two luxurious sparkling wines from France, both known for their effervescence and elegance. Despite their similarities, there are key differences between them, which are reflected in their production, origin and flavour.

Champagne

Champagne is probably the most famous sparkling wine in the world and comes from the Champagne region in north-east France. To be allowed to call itself "Champagne", the wine must come from this specific region and comply with the strict regulations of the appellation system. The main grape varieties for Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Champagne is produced using the traditional method, also known as the "Méthode Champenoise".

The production process begins with the first fermentation of the grape juice into a still wine. This is followed by blending, where different wines are mixed together to achieve the desired flavour. The blended wine is then bottled, along with a mixture of sugar and yeast to start the second fermentation in the bottle. This process produces the characteristic bubbles of Champagne. After the second fermentation, the champagne matures in the bottles on the lees, giving it complex flavours and a fine perlage. After a certain ageing period, the champagne is disgorged to remove the yeast and some dosage (sugar) may be added to refine the final flavour.

Champagne is known for its complexity and complexity. It can have notes of fresh apples, pears, lemons or even brioche and nuts, depending on the grape variety and the ageing period. The bubbles are usually very fine and creamy, giving the champagne an elegant texture. Champagne is often a symbol of celebration and is enjoyed on special occasions.

Crémant

Crémant is another type of sparkling wine that is also produced using the traditional method, but outside of the Champagne region. The term "Crémant" refers to sparkling wines from various French regions, such as Crémant d'Alsace, Crémant de Bourgogne or Crémant de Loire. The production of crémant follows similar principles to that of champagne, although the grape varieties and style can differ depending on the region.

A crémant is usually made from a variety of grape varieties that are typically found in the respective region. For example, Crémant d'Alsace is often made from Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling, while Crémant de Bourgogne is mainly made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The production process also includes a first fermentation, assemblage, second fermentation in the bottle and maturation on the lees.

The flavour profiles of crémant vary depending on the region and the grapes used, but generally offer a fresh, lively character. Crémant can have notes of green apples, citrus fruits or even floral and mineral nuances. The bubbles are usually somewhat coarser than those in Champagne, but Crémant can still have an elegant and refreshing texture.

Comparison and conclusion

The main difference between Champagne and Crémant lies in the origin and the specific regulations of the Champagne region. Champagne often has a more complex flavour and a finer perlage, which is due to the strict ageing requirements and the special conditions of Champagne. Crémant, on the other hand, offers excellent quality at an often lower price and is an excellent choice for those who want to experience the traditional method of sparkling wine production at a better price.

Both wines have their own charm and styles, and the choice between them can depend on personal preference and the occasion. Whether you choose Champagne or Crémant, both offer a special flavour experience and are ideal companions for celebrations and special moments.
