Important: Most of the known Champagne are mainly produced from red grapes.

Grape varieties for champagne

This grape is particularly important for the production of Blanc de Blancs, a champagne made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes.

2. pinot noir

Pinot Noir is a red grape variety that also plays a central role in Champagne production. It brings structure, body and depth to champagne. Compared to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir offers richer flavours, often with notes of red fruits such as cherries, raspberries and strawberries. This grape often adds a certain spice and complexity to Champagne. Pinot Noir is also a key component in most cuvées and is often used in the production of rosé champagnes, which are given a delicate pink colour by the light pressing of the grapes.

3. pinot meunier

Pinot Meunier is a lesser-known but equally important grape variety in Champagne. It is a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape and is characterised by its robust character and ability to adapt well to different terroirs. Pinot Meunier often brings fruity, lively flavours and contributes to the smooth, harmonious texture of Champagne. This grape brings a certain playfulness and approachability to Champagne, making it a popular choice for many cuvées.

Blend and terroir of the grape varieties

In Champagne production, blends of these grape varieties are often used to achieve a balanced and complex end product. The art of assemblage, i.e. the blending of the different base wines, is decisive for the character of the champagne. The choice of grapes and their ratio in the cuvée have a decisive influence on the style and quality of the champagne.

In addition to the grape varieties, the terroir plays a key role in the development of the flavours and characteristics of the champagne. The soil, climate and geographical location of the vineyards influence the growth of the grapes and therefore the quality of the wine. There are various sub-regions in the Champagne region, each of which has its own characteristic features that are reflected in the Champagnes.
